Below you find information about our bunker products and our cooperation with EMSA.

Product specification name: RMD80 max sulphur 0.1%
Also known as: ULSFO, ECA FUEL

History: Along with more stringent sulphur legislation from EU and IMO’s Emission Control Areas the need for an alternative fuel emerged. To meet the new demands a product called RMD80 was developed by the industry. RMD80 is a hybrid fuel with either a residue or a distillate base with a blend in of heavier components, hence the discount compared to the pure gasoil.

Usage: Depending on age of vessel and machinery the RMD80 can be used on the main engine and the auxiliaries. This grade requires pre-treatment and heating onboard.

Product specification name: RMG380 max sulphur 3.5%
Also known as: HSFO, FUEL OIL, BUNKER 380

History: Since the dawn of modern shipping the residue oil streams from the refinery industry have been the primary source for marine fuels across the globe. Over the past decade the sulphur legislation and limits have been tightened. RMG380 is still the most commonly used fuel worldwide.

Usage: RMG380 is used on low-speed to medium-speed main engines for vessel propulsion. Onboard “Cleaning” or running the fuel through separators as well as heating before usage is needed. The high sulphur fuel oil can still be used outside ECA areas globally. The use of fuel oil within the ECA areas is also growing as more vessels install scrubbers cleaning the exhaust gas from sulphur.

Product specification name: DMA max sulphur 0.1%
Also known as: MGO, GASOIL, DIESEL

History: The primary use for DMA has been for electrical power generation onboard and still is. However with the introduction of Emission Control Area large volumes of DMA is used for vessel’s primary propulsion as the DMA is the only alternative for many vessels to meet the current sulphur legislation.

Usage: DMA is used both on main engines and auxiliaries. This is the only alternative for vessels not being able to burn RMD80 nor install scrubbers for RMG380. The clean DMA is a distillate which needs no pre-treatment before usage onboard. Sulphur levels worldwide vary between 0,1% and 1,5%.

We are delivering in accordance to ISO 8217:2010(E), please contact us for inquiries, MSDS or CQ.

Our primary focus at Stena Oil is safety first, from the office in Gothenburg to our marine environment. We are proud to cooperate with the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) for recovering oil spills. Our bunker tanker M/T Norden is part of the EMSA network of stand-by oil spill response vessels, stretching all over Europe.

Regardless of which area a vessel is covering they can be mobilized in any European waters and shared sea basins. In order to guarantee a high level of service we preform regular Oil spill response training, exercises and drills together with the coastguard in Northern Europe.

Norden is still engaged in our daily bunker operations and has been customized to handle oil-spill equipment. The crew on M/T Norden is extensively trained in order to recover oil spill in the best possible way. In the event of an oil spill the commercial operation is ceased and within maximum 24 hrs Norden is available to assist local authorizes with any oil spill recovery.
